毎年楽しみにしている花のひとつに、この定家葛がある。我が家のものではなく、ご近所のもの。その根元をみることができぬほどに繁殖。傍にある杉の木に寄り添いながら成長し続けており、今ではそのお宅の2階建ての母屋の屋根をも越えて。小庭から眺めると、白い小花のタペストリーのようで、風に乗って届けられる芳香は円やかな甘みを伴った、芳しい香り。
蔓性とはいえ、寄りかかっているだけのようで、強く巻きつくこともなく、光りを求め、気の赴くままに育っているよう。支柱になっている杉も何ら影響を受けることなく、依存ではなく尊重の相互理解があるように見える。共生の姿とはこういうものなのかもしれない。
