小庭の古い梅の木は、たくさんの実を付けてはいるものの、今季はどうしたことか、ある程度の大きさになって以降、その後はほとんど大きさが変わらないまま。あと一週間待ってみようと、ここ数週間待ってみたけれど、今日も今日とて先週とほとんど変わらない様子。週間天気予報を眺め、次の日曜辺りからは梅雨らしいお天気が続くとあった。こちらの方が焦れて来てしまい、今日、数年ぶりに青梅を買った。粒ぞろいのそれは美しくあった。例年ならばやらないことだけれども、今年は灰汁だしもして、丁寧に漬け込んでみた。いつもの場所に収めてみると、昨年のものには6月23日に漬け込んだとの記載。年をひとつ重ねたことで、こちらが短気になっていたのかとひとり苦笑した。せめてもの気休めに、4日後でも小庭の梅は変わらないはずと思うことに。
在庫の筆頭は長女が生まれた年に漬け込んだ18年もの。20歳になったら一緒に飲むことを思い描いて初めて漬けたもの。それと次女の生まれた年の16年ものを除いて、今、飲める梅酒で古いものは平成7年の14年もの。4歳児と2歳児の世話に明け暮れていた頃。世の中がどう回っていたのか、何も覚えていなかった。それとは違った意味で、今季の梅酒も数年後に飲む頃には、今の気分も忘却の彼方へ放ってしまっていることであろうけれど。思い起こしつつ、飲むのも味わいかもしれない。
