実家の庭には純白のアフリカ浜木綿（あるいはインド浜木綿）が群れ咲いていた。花だけを観ると百合のよう。しかし花の付き方を見れば、彼岸花科の仲間と。しっかりとした太い茎にいくつもの花をつけている。どんよりとした曇天の下、あるいは梅雨時らしい雨の日には、このどこまでも清く白い花が眩い。個人的には、細く白い花が咲く浜木綿よりも、こちらのアフリカ浜木綿の方が好き。アフリカだのインドだのと冠を付けられてはいるものの、意外にも寒さにも強く、真冬でも霜の心配も要らない。茎の確かさは芯の強さの表れなのかと、清楚な姿に訊ねてみたくなる。
