今か今かと待っていたところ、ようやく咲き始めた赤色の曼珠沙華。蕾の様子からあと少し時間がかかるのかと思っていたけれど、白色の盛りのうちに咲き始めてくれた。小庭の鬱蒼とした翳りの中に、白と赤の幽玄揃い踏み。今頃は、日高市（埼玉県）の巾着田では、一面が赤に染まった景色が見られるのだろう。小庭の球根も巾着田で買い求めてきたもの。手をかけず、自然のままにしているせいか、なかなか数は増えないけれど、こうして今季も咲いてくれ、分けられた命を受け継いでくれている。
花自体は繊細でありながら、どことなく醸し出されるものがあって、花の周りには独特の空気感があるようにも思える。古くは忌み嫌われた花ということもあってか、近寄りがたいものも感じられる。赤の曼珠沙華は朝撮り。この風姿はやはり夕暮れの暗闇のなかで観る方が個人的には好ましい。記憶が正しければ、7回目の開花。巾着田の面影は少しばかり遠くなりつつある。
