昨夕、小庭の梅の木に小鳥が来訪しているのに気付いた。鳥の種類はわからなかったが、毎年来てくれるメジロかなと思っていたところ、古木の枝に白いものが。近づいてよくよく観てみれば、梅の花がいくつも咲いていた。香る黄色の蝋梅ばかりに気を取られていて、すぐ近くにある梅の開花に全く気付かなかったのは不覚。あぁ、もうそんな時季になっていたんだと、あらためて梅の花に教わった。例年ならば年末までには剪定をしていたはずだったが、慌しく過ごしていて、とうとうやれず終い。今季の花は少ないであろうと予想していたところ、少ないながらもこうして咲いてくれている花々が一層愛しく美しい。寒気に包まれ外気は晴天の昼間でも冷たいけれど、この花を愛でられたことに感謝した。仰ぐ空はどこまでも澄んだ青色、眼前には白い梅の花。春は確かに近づいているんだと明日からのセンター試験に臨む娘を思いつつ。
